Description:

From 2008 the Umeå Centre for Women Studies (UCGS) is the organizational host for the research programme Challenging Gender. All faculties at Umeå University are represented in the UCGS. The Challenging Gender programme also includes the Forum for Gender Studies at Mid Sweden University as a partner.

One of five themes, called Challenging Normalization processes, has its base in the interdisciplinary Forum for Gender Studies at Mid Sweden University. The focus of this theme is on cultural normalization: the demands for conformity and sameness. Such processes are seen in gender relations but also in other power dimensions involving "race"/ethnicity, sexuality, class, age/generation. Technologies of power create boundaries which define "them" and "us" within a wide variety of social institutions. In every context, gender relations change and reproduce continuously. The theme explores and challenges such normalization processes within different institutional contexts such as for example Swedish social service agencies, elementary school, as well as Academic life itself.
