The STC concept is the underlying technology for infrastructures such as the intelligent home, the on-line fab, or intelligent consumer products. Intelligent products need to sense their environment, make decisions and communicate. They will allow easy and low-cost integration of control and monitoring systems in industrial environments as well as provide functional products that help organizing our everyday life. The invention of the mobile phone was one important step in this direction, which allowed us to extend our communication and assess range considerably. This technology opened the door for a new generation of intelligent products (STCs) that extend the range of our senses and allow remote control and monitoring of our environment.
